Green Carnation-Light of Day, Day of Darkness. I work as the music director of my college radio station. Most of the stuff that comes in is pure shit. It isn't very often that something comes across my desk that really catches my attention. This is one of those exceptions. Green Carnation is about as progressive as it comes without the bullshit I hate about most but not all prog (death vocals, wimpy vocals, cheese). The album was recorded on a HUGE 150 tracks. Amazingly the music doesn't sound cluttered. I would hate to be the guy who mixed this disc. The music is heavy. They did use a string section for much of the album. Don't let the strings scare you into thinking that is cheesey crap or like Therion ( I like Therion BTW). They are used more for atmosphere and complement the other instruments instead of jumping out and detracting from the music. The one and only negative comment is that it is one, 60:05 song with no indexing!! I absolutely hate to sit and mash the fast forward button for six minutes to get forty minute ahead. Then work the feeling back into my abused finger. The album is on The End Records. This is the first I have heard of that lable but I am sure someone else has. Do yourself a favor and check this out. And for all of you CMJ readers watch for the new DT to be number one at KSAU. :) Thorin ---YTSEJAM FILTER: Rest of message skipped because of attachment ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 19:19:26 -0500 From: "Dr. Scott Mosher" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: DT/Rush summer tour... Message-ID: Hahaha! I don't know about that, it would seem Mike P. would have to come to terms with Neil Peart's comments (which were seemingly out of character for him) regarding the 'bar band' Rush Tribute CD a few years back. It would be a great show, for sure, but considering that Rush is at the 'An Evening with Rush' phase, and DT are possibly entertaining the same treatment, I think the odd's, just for those two reasons alone, are astronomically low. Maybe DT and FW at some point! That was a very descriptive and interesting review! --- From: Graham Borland >Do what I've just done: buy a portable MP3 player. It sounds like a great idea, in theory. In practice, given that I really would like to get a functioning stereo/tape deck/CD player of some kind for my car (right now, all I've got that works is the manufacturer's radio) irrespective of more advanced current and future technical innovations, an mp3 player might be a few steps beyond me and my budget at this moment. And beyond my PC's capabilities to feed it with mp3s. :) But such is life. Thanks just the same! Alex ==== "Incest.... it's the game the whole family can play!" Any other lurkers going to be there? Who's hosting the get together? The ticket price wasn't so bad. Then you add in the service charge and "handling fee" though, and it gets up there. $25 ticket price $5.50 service charge per ticket $3.25 handling fee $64.25 total for 2 tickets ouch thankfully, I can afford it. One advantage of being old. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 07:42:07 -0800 (PST) From: Adam Perkowsky To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: DT at #2 Message-ID: Hey everyone, --- Graham Borland wrote: > > We're up to #2 in the CDNow top 100, having just > displaced Pink > Floyd. Now, who the hell is Alan Jackson? Wow, No. 2. What an accomplishment. All this shows me is that there are too many Dream Theater fans who don't get out of the house much. Here's a thought. On Jan. 29, venture out of the house and buy the CD at a record store! :) The fact that Alan Jackson's (a country singer) CD is No. 1 tells me that there are more Alan Jackson fans that need to get out of the house more. "Request list" would perhaps be a better way to put this... But when Rush goes on tour in 2002 in support of their new album, we (the "hard core" fans) hope to hear some "rarities" included in the set list. So, we are working on this "petition", which we intend to respectfully submit to the band's management. For the sake of getting some true rarities here, the song list (below) is being limited to songs that Rush has not played live in the past ten years (songs that have been played live between 1991 and 2001 are excluded.). It works like this - each person gets to select FIVE songs from the list below, submit their votes, and then the final results will be submitted to Anthem/SRO for presentation to the band. The requests will be presented on the new album's release date (Spring, 2002). Each individual is allowed to vote once. Our goal in doing this is to communicate to the band that the fans ARE interested in some of the more "obscure" songs, and try to offer specifics so they will receive feedback on which tunes the fans would be interested in hearing "brought back". With that said, we respect the band's artistic wishes. We sincerely hope this petition will be considered by the band, but are comfortable that they'll play what they want to play (that's the way it should be). If we merely end up communicating the results of this petition to the band, and nothing else comes of it, we will still have achieved our goal. As an aside, we do also hope that the band will perform on the next tour in the same "Evening With" format as they did on the Test For Echo tour in '96/'97. Please help spread the word about this page, and let's get some votes going! Thanks!
