It's pretty damn cool. he does a lot on warming up (including some exercises without the guitar!) and lead playing: ways to get your speed up, small phrases to string together for longer leads, and stuff like that. There's also a part at the end where he gives a tour of his Awake-era rig, with that badass rack full of gear. it's pretty cool. definitely check it out,it's helped my playing quite a bit. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998 00:34:51 EST From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YtseJam for classical Piano!!! "The Wake of Magellan", and "Dead Winter Dead" both rank up there very high on my all-time favorite CDs list. "Handful of Rain" isn't far behind them, either. All this negative talk about KJLB is reminding me of comments that people have stated as "their reason for not liking DT". I myself appreciate and respect LaBrie's voice.....even though it did take quite a while for me to get adjusted to his high range, back in the days. Even though I'm not a vocalist (just another guitar player :-)....I can enjoy his singing now because I know it's purely talented and professional, and it has grown on me in such a way that I couldn't imagine DT with any other singer. Unfortunately, the average eMpTyV watcher couldn't even begin to comprehend the musicianship behind LaBrie's voice without saying "Dude, this is like totally 80's!". Every time I play DT for a friend, I get replies like "Oh man this is awesome, tight- sounding.....but their singer just ruins it!" It seems like a lot of people are turned off to DT b/c of LaBrie's voice. Anyone else notice this? If LaBrie ever got booted (which will NEVER happen I hope)....maybe DT could mesh with the unemployed Chris Cornell....he does have a unique tone and a decent range. (Please take note that the previous statement was NOT meant to endorse Cornell....just a thought). Long live Labrie! This, based on about a total of 1:35 listening to the entire CD - typical Howard. It was pretty funny, but I wish he was able to listen to it a bit more. I actually thought of sending in 15 seconds clips of DT songs for them to pick from to play in those segments, esp. Met. when the drums kick in after the intro....that would be awesome. Message-ID: Hey everyone, Just some general stuff to claim some bandwidth: As far as Rush and the RaRHoF - someone posted one of the eligibility requirements as 25 years after the release of their first album. Well, Rush's debut album was released in 1974, which by my calculations was 24 years ago. Better we wait until next year before we start bitching too much :) Hey if they don't make it, who the fuck cares, everyone on this list knows what Rush has meant to the rock music scene and specially Prog-Rock. And after all we are the only ones whose opinions' matter anyway! (This thought process can be applied to DT on the radio as well) Different Stage - Very cool CD, including the art. A couple of observation; I hate those shitty cardboard covers, and what the fuck am I supposed to do with disc 3? I know I'm supposed to listen to it, but it just falls right out of the packaging- give me a break! As far as song selection, when you have the amount of material Rush has, someone's always going to feel like they could've done better with the set list. I thought the set list was a pretty fair representation of the TfE tour I saw. Can you imagine DT not playing PMU even on their fourth live CD? That's how I think Rush approaches CttH and tSoR and maybe some others, they just have to include them, oh well MHO. As for Presto, I love SDT and think the live version absolutely kicks ass (Geddy is a wild man!), but as for the rest of the album I didn't miss any of the other songs, sorry. However, Max, I own the album. You should get it, borrow it, whatever, but give it a chance before bashing it (if you did, than that's OK, I apologize and that's your opinion which you are entitled to). OiaLT/JLBs voice - JLB's voice on OiaLT is not perfect and I don't think anyone can dispute that. I think OiaLT is a very good album, which captures DT live in a very honest manner, which means warts and all. To me, the criticisms I have about OiaLT are the same one's I have about their live sound, so to me it just proves what a faithful representation of their live performance it is. In listening to Rush DS disc 3 I am amazed at how awesome Geddy's voice during the old Rush days. I realize that is exactly the reason Rush wasn't popular with more people in the early years but hey to me that was the best Geddy. By contrast I think his singing on 2112 at the end of disc 1 just sucks. But what the fuck, it's not like he's going to belt it out like he did in the past. If he'd have kept that up, his career would've been over by 1980! Where am I going with this, well I'll tell yah - Have you noticed JLB sounds just totally awesome on the FII tracks of OiaLT? Well I personally think he sounds much better on those songs. Maybe he could take a lesson learned from Geddy, and just change the song when his voice can handle the note. Of course then he'll be criticized for that too! Oh well, ...but you can't please all of the people all of the time. APSoG - Terry Brown is Da Man! APSoG is an amazingly produced album as where the early rush albums, IMO. He has my vote to produce everyone's music as far as I am concerned, if you get my drift. I guess Still Life will round out an unbelievable year of Live albums. Enough.
