All this talk about Stanley Jordan brings to mind two vastly different yet incredibly brilliant practitioners of the two-handed tapping technique: Reb Beach -- yeah, the guy who used to be in those goofy Winger videos -- and T.J. Helmerich, who's made two amazing (mostly instrumental) albums with an Australian six-string phenomenon named Brett Garsed (the latter would probably rather you forget that he was in *Nelson*, of all bands). IMO, Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein were the only reasons Winger was ever halfway listenable; the former's solos are so breathtaking that I often find myself fast-forwarding through those big, hooky choruses just to hear those tapped cascades and flurries of notes, so crystalline and smooth, so elegant in the way they flow off the fretboard. Perfect example: "Seventeen," which is a big, dumb brute of an MTV video song, all swaggering, macho lyrics, singalong chorus and huge snare sound -- then Beach unleashes one of the most devastating solos I've ever heard, notes swarming like angry, frenzied bees, spinning and swirling from the speakers in a torrent of virtuosity. Meanwhile, T.J. Helmerich's searing two-handed work with Brett Garsed is probably the most amazing tapping stuff I've ever heard; to my ear, it sounds as though he never, ever picks a note. His solos are like liquid mercury, all curves and circles, contrasting beautifully with Garsed's frenetic, angular speed-picking runs. No one I've heard has a smoother, more articulated tapping style than Helmerich, and that's why I rank him as one of the top five or six guitarists on the planet. (Hmm...Holdsworth, Vai, Morse, Petrucci, Lane, Greg Howe and Helmerich...that sounds about right...) Any of you out there know of any other brilliant two-hand tappers besides Eddie Van Halen (who did NOT invent the technique, contrary to popular belief) and the aforementioned Stanley Jordan? I'd mention the likes of Michael Manring, Stuart Hamm and John Alderete, but they're *bass* players, and that's a whole other thread... -- Jeff (making up for his much more concise ELP post) :^) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 May 1998 00:44:40 EDT From: KEZCOM To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Rogerio Message-ID: In a message dated 98-05-01 23:00:49 EDT, you write: << > To whom it may concern: I'm unsubscribing from this list. > > []s, Roger... Follow all signs CAREFULLY to stay on Route 100(toward Gibson Island). After crossing Route 10, take Edwin Rainer Blvd. exit(2nd exit after Route 10). Take a right at top of ramp onto Edwin Rainer Blvd. Continue on until Edwin Rainer Blvd. dead-ends into Fort Smallwood Road(at a stoplight). Turn left onto Fort Smallwood Road. Go approximately 1 mile(through 2 lights) and at the third light, Daytona's should be on your right, McDonald's should be on your left. Turn right at light and park behind the club, then stroll over to McD's to meet the rest of the gang! Good luck and BE CAREFUL! If further info is needed, e-mail me ASAP.
